A visit to Henry Ford Estate offers insight into the life of Detroit's most legendary resident. Offering tours of Fair Lane, Ford's 56-room mansion, which was built in 1914 by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, the 1,300 acre estate features tours of the estate's powerhouse as well, containing examples of Ford's hydroelectric generators, and his research laboratory. An elegant restaurant, housed in the mansion's original swimming pool room, as well a gift shop, offering antique jewelry, numerous books and toy Model-Ts are also on premises. The estate is located next to the University of Michigan - Dearborn campus, about a mile from the Henry Ford Museum and historic Greenfield Village.
